How to: Set Up Free Website Tracking Using Google Analytics

Before you embark on any sort of marketing campaign or SEO work it’s vitally important that you have a way of gauging whether your efforts are working. That’s what tracking tools like Google’s free system, Analytics, do for you. They gather data about your site visitors so that you can assess how well your website is performing. In this post I’m going to go through how you setup and install Google Analytics. The whole process should take you only around 5 minutes.

Setting up Google Analytics

The portal for Analytics is www.google.com/analytics. When you get there you’ll find a button in the top right hand corner which says ‘Access Google Analytics’.

To register for Analytics you’ll need a Google Account, so if you have Gmail or the like you can sign in with your existing credentials and if not you’ll need to register from scratch. Once you’ve logged into your Google Account, you’ll then get the sign up screen for the Google Analytics service:

When you set up the new account you’ll first be asked for an account name, and then the details of the first website you would actually like to track (you can add more later):

Google Analytics sign up screen

When you’ve filled in this form, hit the blue ‘Get Tracking ID’ button and, once you’ve been prompted to accept the T&Cs, you’ll be taken to another page which gives you your tracking code. It’ll look something like this:

Google Analytics sample tracking code

This code needs to be inserted in every page you want to track. It can go anywhere, but Google suggests placing it just after the opening body tag. If you’re unfamiliar with HTML markup, the body tag will look like this – <body>

I’ve seen people take this instruction very literally and place the code inside the tag itself after the word body and before the end of the bracket. This is not what is meant. You need to place your code directly after the whole tag, which means after the closing bracket and not before.

Analytics will now track all of the pages you have installed the code to. You can find the data it gathers back at www.google.com/analytics. In a further post I will explain the Analytics dashboard and how to navigate it.

Using Google Analytics with WordPress

If you have a WordPress site your theme author may have included a place in the dashboard where you can enter your code so that it appears automatically on every page. If not, there are free plugins available that will do that same thing.

  1. Hi Jo,

I came across your website a while back – nice update recently by the way! 🙂

I’m a web designer/ developer based in Banbury and your site pops up on Google from time to time.

Do you use any other analytics software? I always use Google Analytics. I’ve tried Clicky Analytics before but I’ve never really explored anything else.

    Thanks,

    Laurence

    1. Hi Laurence, sorry for the delay in replying but I was on holiday last week.

I’ve always stuck with Google Analytics to be honest, because it does such a great job I’ve never really considered looking elsewhere.

Will check out your site! Always nice to meet other designers nearby.

Jo did a wonderful job creating my new website — just look at it. She grasped the brief immediately, and then she added her own creative spin. I found her very easy to work with, partly because she listens attentively. She’s also been prompt and patient with my follow-up questions as I’ve learned how to navigate my new site. All in all this was an incredibly painless experience with an outstanding result. Thanks Jo

I was delighted with Jo’s work: she combines an excellent eye for spacious design with patience and inventiveness.

I was lost in a sea of technical jargon and hosting gobbledygook until Jo appeared like an angel from on high and fixed everything for me, getting my site back up and running in no time at all, with no fuss. Jo’s technical knowledge meant I could relay my problem in layman’s terms and she knew exactly what to do straight away. I would definitely recommend Jo Cox Design for anyone needing a website creating.

I put a message up on facebook that I needed someone to take over the hosting of my new website, and Jo responded and left her number. I got in touch and she took control of the situation, contacting the previous host and effecting the transfer. I have been impressed with Jo’s knowledge, helpfulness and her calm manner. Thank you Jo.

Jo Cox Design is great value for money. Jo understood the brief completely, while the handover/after-sales were very reassuring. Two things that I would like to highlight: 1) Jo gives you a useful training session in using WP and 2) the mobile version of my website is particularly exceptional. I can highly recommend Jo to any potential client, from a start-up to a fully fledged organization, looking to make an impact on the web.

Jo was brilliant from the moment I first got in contact with her. She understood what I needed and the vision I had in my head, which she managed to get on to a website. Quick worker and reliable. The website has totally taken off too, so I’m so happy I went with Jo Cox Design.

Lucy Beesley

Thank you very much to Jo Cox Design for assisting in changing and updating our website. Jo was extremely helpful and dealt with my requests very quickly. Would certainly recommend.

Rachel Watmough (Butterfly Bridal Boutique)

Brilliant website with a huge volume of material made accessible. Really effective and easy to use. Can’t recommend you highly enough.

Marie Wright (OXDOX)

As a freelance musician and teacher my website is very important for generating business and maintaining good contact with my clients. I have found Jo Cox Design very useful to help maintain elements of my site which are more complex. I like to have control of my site but I often find there are things I cannot achieve on my own. I would certainly recommend Jo as a friendly person who’s easy to work with and who can help you achieve such goals.

Jo has been looking after my website for a couple of years now. She has just completed another refresh of the site for me, tidying up a few pages and installed a fantastic new booking system that has made a huge improvement to the functionality of the site. I’m really pleased with the result, and the website looks great. I can highly recommend Jo for all your website needs.

Andrew Tee (Get More Adventure)

I knew the moment I spoke to Jo that she was the right person to transfer our website over to a content management system.  We were looking for someone who combined a really good technical knowledge of WordPress with a keen eye for design, and Jo provided just that.  She was fast, thorough and incredibly straightforward in her approach and nothing was too much trouble.  The training Jo delivered as part of the job was clear and thorough too.  Thank you, Jo, for a fantastic job!

Tessa Lamb (Business Language Training)

Despite the fact that I am a dinosaur when it comes to technology you had the patience to see me through to being able to give you the text and pictures, which you then turned into a really good finished article. I have had many emails from people who have seen it, all of whom have congratulated me on the website. But the congratulations really relate to your work.

Mike Mackenzie

Jo was very professional, approachable and knowledgeable. She managed to fix all the issues with our charity WordPress site in super-quick time, as well as giving me a thorough and easy to understand tutorial, enabling me to amend the website myself in future. I will certainly use her services again in the future.

Maggie Davies (Footsteps Foundation)

I recently hired Jo to give me some basic HTML and website editing training. I learnt so much in one hour, and she really demonstrated her knowledge, without jargon, and demystified some of the magic of web programming. I would recommend Jo to anyone who needs to brush up on their HTML knowledge, but I would also hire her for larger projects. She was a pleasure to work with and I look forward to working with her again in the future.

Ruth Holroyd

Great service, fast, efficient and excellent value for money… Thanks Jo

Stan Law (Grant Handling)

Jo is a very rare person. She has the technical know how to build you a beautiful website in the blink of an eye, but more importantly, (unlike most techie types), she can explain everything about the process in simple layman’s terms. As a result, the process of designing and managing your website is completely stress free. Her charges are very reasonable too. Thank you, Jo.

Emma Kemp

We couldn’t believe our luck when Jo offered to build us our website for free. We were even more astounded when only weeks later we had a great site, purpose build to our needs. We couldn’t have paid for a better site or more fluid an experience of commissioning a website.

Emma Gordon (Centre Manager, Bicester Green)

Jo dealt calmly with a very complex and difficult brief, to my great satisfaction, and a subsequent rise in sales.
